Wild About Our River

Goliad County Youth Can Become Kayak Kids!
Wild About Our River Kayak Program
Introduces Youth to Water Sport

Goliad County Youth: You have an opportunity right at your back door that lots of other kids throughout the nation would have to drive miles and miles to do. Learn to kayak and take a kayak trip down the river.

Under the direction of a certified kayak instructor and lifeguard, Goliad county youth going into the 6th through 12th grades will learn the basics of safe kayak instruction and will then embark from the historic Ferry Street river crossing for a 1.4 mile kayak trip to Goliad State Park.

The program, dubbed Wild About Our River, will also provide conservation and preservation tips and stories revealing the historical significance of the San Antonio River to Goliad's development.

The following dates have been set aside to serve our youth through this one-day program:

2007 - Classes & Short River Run
Monday, June 25
Saturday, June 30
Monday, July 9

History, Conservation, Reading the River in the morning beginning at 8:00. Lunch, then stroke lessons with certified kayak instructor (Hector) in the pool, and followed by a trip from Ferry Street to the park.

2007 - River Trips for Graduates
Wednesday, July 11
Friday, July 13

For all participants that have already attended the workshop and will go from Hwy 59 to the Park. Family members will be accommodated on an availability basis. The deadline for registration is July 6th.

A maximum of 24 youth can be served on each date above, so pre-registration is required. Call Lea Huth of Goliad State Park, 645-3405, to reserve your spot today.

On the day of the event, sign-in is 8:00 - 8:30 a.m. at the Goliad State Park Group Dining Hall. Youth must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during sign-in. Parents and guardians are invited back to the Group Dining Hall at 4 p.m. to participate in an Awards Ceremony recognizing the youth upon their completion of the training and kayak trip down the San Antonio River. Each youth will also receive a free Wild About Our River t-shirt.

Kayaks and all safety gear will be provided. The youth will need to bring their own sack lunch, bottled water, pen/pencil, sunblock, hat, sunglasses, towel and water shoes or tennis shoes that can get wet.

This workshop is made possible by a Community Outdoor Outreach Program (COOP) grant provided to Canoe Trail Goliad (CTG). Partners with CTG in funding this program are Goliad Heritage Council, First National Bank of Goliad, 4R Brumby Ranch, General Ignacio Zaragoza Society, Goliad Lions Club, Goliad Masonic Lodge, Goliad Rotary Club, Goliad State Park, National Park Service Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program, the San Antonio River Authority and Texas Parks and Wildlife Freshwater Resources Program. This program would not be available without the generous support of these partners!
